Uhm you have a point: time for yourself should be there when you need it, not when the economy needs it. But it's never been the case that this was feasible, unless you managed to be horribly rich, which often was because mommy and daddy, or maybe granddad, had managed to seize a big chunk of land at the expense of someone else... ok that's a can of worms I don't feel like opening right now.

Pragmatically, the only way left is to make your own time; maybe you're tired as hell at eight in the afternoon, but each hour spent in front of the tv could be spent with little extra effort writing your poems. Which reminds me of a couple of sentences I read in books a long time ago, one was a heart speaking to its owner and saying something along the lines of: I can relax between contractions, and the other being a man in his sixties trekking with two twenty years old, thinking to himself, they're strong but I know more tricks, I know how to relax between steps.

What about good old doublethink? Completely dedicated to your job while not feeling chained to it, paying attention to what's going on without being obsessed? Hard to master but I've got a feeling that it might work. And the alternative is plain sadness so might as well give it a shot, right?
